None of a parliament’s key functions of representation, oversight and scrutiny can happen meaningfully without quality information. Despite this, the systems that shape how parliaments gather, appraise and use evidence, and the parliamentary staff who are at the forefront of these activities are too often overlooked in parliamentary strengthening programmes. INASP Annual review 2016-17

Julie Brittain, INASP Executive Director, looks back at the past year and shares some highlights from our latest annual review. The INASP team, in collaboration with our network of local partners, have been working very hard this past year to implement our new five-year strategy, launched last year. INASP through the years: 1992 to today … and beyond

In my last post I wrote about the 12-metre-long timeline that is now adorning INASP’s wall to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year and I described something of the journey that this timeline shows. But, unashamedly, a timeline is more than an overview; it is full of detail about which activities happened in which year, as well as what was going on in the wider world at the same time. Indeed, even at 12 metres, we had to be surprisingly selective in what we included; a lot has happened in 25 years!

Mind the gap: Creating agents of change to address gender inequity in research

Last month we put INASP’s Gender Toolkit into action by supporting Ghana’s foremost national science and technology institute, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to launch a gender mainstreaming process – starting with a gender sensitization workshop for 30 women researchers drawn from CSIR head office and various institutes under CSIR. ‘Reading organizations’: a new diagnostic tool to improve knowledge to policy systems

Clara Richards, Senior Programme Manager, Evidence-Informed Policy Making Team, INASP introduces a series of posts on new approaches for organizational change Over the four years in which INASP and Politics & Ideas have been improving knowledge to policy systems, we have heard a great deal about the complex context within which public agencies operate. Recognizing the need for new approaches to address this complexity, we developed the ‘Context Matters’ framework. The framework summarizes key organizational factors influencing how government agencies use –  or don’t use – knowledge. This year, we are ready to apply it as a new diagnostic tool to improve the use of knowledge in policy within a government agency.
