Helping women bridge the gap between research and publications

In April of this year, INASP was delighted to join OWSD – The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World – in Khartoum, for the launch of the OWSD-Sudan National Chapter and the workshop on Bridging the Gap between Research and Publications. OWSD is an independent, non-profit and non-governmental body based in Trieste, Italy, who support research training, career development and networking opportunities for women scientists throughout the developing world. The formation of the OWSD-Sudan National Chapter will enable greater promotion of Sudanese female participation in science and technology, scientific leadership and in decision-making processes at both regional and national level.

Working in collaboration with OWSD is helping INASP to meet its strategic aim of actively addressing the needs of men and women across all our work and addressing issues of power within the research and knowledge system. INASP has supported OWSD members through participation in the AuthorAID MOOCs in research writing and through our online mentoring system and so were delighted to be invited to support the OWSD-Sudan workshop on research and publications. INASP’s online and face-to-face courses are carefully designed to support early-career researchers to better communicate their research with the intent that this will enable research that is produced in countries such as Sudan to reach a wider audience.

Women researchers often struggle to publish, partly because of gaps in knowledge about research writing or about the publishing process, and partly due to a lack of time resulting from the other roles and responsibilities they have as women. Providing our training to a group of women researchers offers a unique opportunity to support them to better navigate the publishing process, and also to build peer networks which can provide ongoing support and motivation.

The video below, commissioned by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), shows the launch of the OWSD Sudan National Chapter and the workshop on Bridging the Gap between Research and Publications.

Hello. You can find out information about our online courses on scientific research writing on our AuthorAID website. Please see http://www.authoraid.info/en/e-learning. You will also find other resources and information on the site, and can join the online mentoring programme to find an experienced mentor who would be able to help you with specific tasks related to writing and publishing. I hope this helps!
