Travel grant recipient Om Basukala from Nepal shares his joy on being able to pursue a PhD and acknowledges the support he received from AuthorAID

Thank you AuthorAID and INASP for giving me an opportunity to attend ‘Trieste Course Leishmania 2014’ and present my work at ICGEB, Trieste, Italy, by supporting me with a travel grant last year. This was a dream come true for someone like me in a developing country to kick start my research enthusiasm. I was well appreciated for my presentation and work at ICGEB, which paved a path towards my future research career.

It gives me immense pleasure to share with you my recent successful application to pursue a PhD at ICGEB, with an Arturo Falaschi Fellowship award to continue my research work in infectious disease. I will be working at ICGEB, Trieste Tumor Virology Group, being supervised by Dr. Lawrence Banks on disinterring the mechanisms of human papilloma virus-induced tumorogenesis. Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, mainly in developing countries.

Once again, thank you for the travel support. I hope more such opportunities will be available for people from developing countries in the future.

Sincere greetings and Namaste!

Hello Om Basukala, great to hear your inspiring remarks and joining the team from ICGEB. My interest is reading your thesis as a student of Public health in Cavendish University Uganda. Am in my final year for master of Science in Public Health degree. I hand delved so much in Sexual and reproductive Health as my area of greatest interest in public and can be sure to do my research starting next month December 2015 for six months. I shall be done by August 2016. Your thesis can easily make me the next candidate for research in my career.

looking forward to reading from you again.

    Thank you

  • I think it would be good to provide more one-to-one support to developing-country researchers. Perhaps we can think about combining training, mentoring, and English editing: researchers can start by getting trained on writing and publishing, then be mentored to write up a paper, and finally have their paper edited.
